<p>We all know the Irish have the gift of gab and the ability to bring light to challenging situations with their words. I wonder sometimes though if the Irish realize the power of this gift and what it means to those around them. </p>
<p>I have always been proud to be part of a culture that takes life in stride by &#8220;rising to the occasion&#8221; while keeping a strong sense of humor intact. They say laughter is the best medicine and the Irish have certainly figured out how to use laughter and light-heartedness to see them through many challenges. After being raised by an Irish American mother, very important that I mention American because my mother always reminded me that I am an American of Irish descent, who had an expression for every life experience; I can personally attest to this. </p>
<p>I remember as a child when I would become jealous of my sisters or feel sorry for myself, my mother would say to me in a sing-song voice:</p>
<p>Nobody loves me, nobody cares. I am going to eat whole lot of worms and die&#8211;big fat juicy ones and itsy, bitsy teensy ones, and I am going to chew them up and spit them in your eye.</p>
<p>After hearing that, I would immediately start laughing and realize how silly I was being. Remembering these funny words and the way in which my mother delivered them still makes me laugh and reminds me to take a step back and re-evaluate a situation. Her ability to do this through humor taught me to keep my sense of humor in life. That is a powerful lesson to teach a child with just a silly little statement.</p>
<p>When I share my mother&#8217;s funny antidotes and wisdom, I am able to make others laugh at themselves or a situation and pass that wisdom along, which is the gift the Irish give to those around us. </p>

<p>Happiness can feel like a land far away. A place that once we arrive, the stay is brief. This was my experience for most of my life. I would hit a great place, feel unbelievably happy, and be convinced that I would feel that way forever more. But soon, the feeling would wane, and then disappear. I used to wonder why something so wonderful was so elusive, and why it had to be wedged into such fleeting periods between periods of &#8216;not-very-happy-at-all.&#8217; I&#8217;m glad I started asking myself questions like that. One-by-one, they led me to where I am today: Happy to Be ME!. </p>
<p>But back in 2005, I was stressed out, overworked, and driven. What I affectionately call a &#8220;Driven Diva&#8221; in fact. A serial over-achiever, striving day in and day out to get to success and fulfillment.• I would push to make things happen. • I believed I had to be poised even in the highest stress situations. • I often felt like there was a double-standard keeping me from having it all.• I had to do it all because I figured asking for help would be a sign of weakness.• I was smiling on the outside, but secretly mentally and emotionally exhausted, and a little resentful on the inside.</p>
<p>The happiness I was looking for would come in external occurrences: praise or recognition from bosses, vacations, expensive meals, promotions, a good bottle of wine, a fun date. But deep down, I knew something was missing. I knew happiness wasn&#8217;t supposed to be the way I was experiencing it. I knew there was much more, I just didn&#8217;t know how to access it; I didn&#8217;t know what to shift to have the kind of happiness I deserved. And I was envious of people around me who looked like they did.</p>
<p>Thank goodness those days are behind me! Thank goodness for that momentous day in Hoag Hospital Emergency Room, where I asked another question that started the journey into the biggest shifts in my life. Thank goodness for the &#8220;radical sabbatical&#8221; that started in 2006, and all the things I&#8217;ve experienced that have helped me connect to the authentic happiness within, and keep the happiness flowing in my life no matter what is going on around me. </p>
<p>Why is my focus on happiness? Because one of the things I&#8217;ve learned is that happy people have stronger immune systems, are more successful and live longer. Yes, all those years I was chasing happiness as a result of success, I had it backward! So if you want to feel more healthy, fulfilled and create more success in your life, take a trip inward and tap into your own innate place of joy! </p>
<p>Where is this you ask? It&#8217;s actually who you really are. You are Magnificent Essence &#8211; the ME in Happy to Be ME! &#8211; the spiritual nature of you that is having the human experience of your life. True and lasting happiness is already a part of who you really are, and therefore available to you every minute. The longer you look for happiness in things outside you and that you can&#8217;t control, the longer you&#8217;ll be unfulfilled and unhappy. &#8220;Finding&#8221; authentic happiness is about a journey within; it&#8217;s about creating a deep relationship with yourSelf. You have to go beneath the personality, identity, story and woundology of who you are &#8211; that&#8217;s the me in &#8220;mighty ego.&#8221; Instead, remember the Truth of who you are as &#8220;Image and Likeness of the Divine.&#8221; As that Truth, you are Peace, Love, Freedom and Joy. Everything you seek is always already inside you. I have lived in 10 states, moved 22 times and visited 27 countries on 5 continents, and the journey into me has been the most rewarding one I&#8217;ve ever experienced. And I never had to go anywhere to take it! How magnificent is that?!Here are some tools you&#8217;ll want to have on this journey:1. Desire to be free of limiting beliefs and behaviors that hold you back and willingness to take committed action;2. Some specific steps to take that can be your roadmap;3. A guide to help you through the tough spots;4. A support structure to keep you going as the journey unfolds.</p>
<p>We live in the human realm, and here, there will always be human experiences … struggle, lack, limitation, fear, frustration, disease. But when you tap into the Magnificent Essence of you, you will transcend the debilitating effects of these experiences and authentic happiness will be a part of your life even in the midst of those and other things that would ordinarily make you unhappy. </p>
<p>In the end, it&#8217;s about free will. You get to choose how your life will be. You can choose to continue to search in struggle and suffering for fleeting moments of external happiness. Or you can choose to give yourself the only happiness that matters: that which is the real you. </p>
<p>For people ready to choose the latter, I am standing by to help. There is nothing more rewarding than to give back and share what has worked for me. <p>Child Visitation and The Formation Of Self-Esteem&#8211;Part II In my capacity as an outpatient psychologist, I have worked with people for almost twenty-five years. By far, the single most central element, the one thing that pervades almost every other issue is self-esteem. It touches everything&#8211;sex and relationships, work problems, anxiety, depression, addictions; you name it. This is Part II of a four-part series in which the subject of self-esteem is explored, particularly in the context of &#8220;visiting&#8221; divorced parents. This emotional and physical climate challenges the natural development of self-esteem&#8211;it is hard to parent children through this even if the family is intact! The development of self-esteem is examined through the author&#8217;s system and theory of self-esteem. There are four primary elements of self-esteem. In my system, I call them &#8220;Powers&#8221; because when we develop any one of them, we become more personally powerful. The Four Powers of Self-Esteem are: Worth, Competence, Ego-Strength and Self-Acceptance. Please read Part I before reading this article. As said before, even good parents functioning in intact families can miss the boat in these two areas. In a divorcing-parent household, this is even more difficult to achieve. The goal is to carry out the nasty business of divorcing and leave the child&#8217;s ego intact. Sound almost impossible? One of the biggest pitfalls parents stumble over is telling the child too much. &#8220;Daddy isn&#8217;t coming over tonight to get you and your brother because he has another girlfriend.&#8221; &#8220;Mommy doesn&#8217;t care enough about you to buy you new school clothes.&#8221; These statements are extremely damaging to the child, and they provide more information than the child can handle. They cannot control absent parents and they cannot defend against the messages that the child is less important than someone or something else. Communicate this kind of message to a child only a few times and just watch the acting out escalate. Rather, tells the child &#8220;Mommy had something of a problem, sends her love and wants to see you longer tomorrow. You don&#8217;t have to worry.&#8221; Tell the child, &#8220;Mommy and Daddy are going to each buy you school supplies. You might even get more than you think.&#8221; Leave out the damaging parts and emphasize the positive. Embedded in each of these positive messages is the idea that the child is important, loved and will be cared for, despite the state of the parents. In reality, divorcing parents usually are nowhere near the state of mind needed to be so nice. Negativity creeps into messages, even ones intended to be neutral, and the child goes down the dark path of self-recriminating thoughts and feelings. Children take in these lousy self-messages in great quantity. Then, they are stuck with them and have to compensate. What does a child do with a bunch of negative self-introjects? Well, initially, their anxiety goes up and since children do not have vocabularies to express their feelings, they act out. In younger children, anxiety spikes, then motor behaviors increase, often resulting in the child getting into things, pushing limits, testing, or being aggressive. In short, they misbehave, and then the consequences are meted out, if the parents still have their wits about them. Another process that damages the child&#8217;s sense of basic worth is the different rules, values, rewards and punishments between the two-divorced parent&#8217;s homes. Parents that could not work together when married and then divorced are even less likely to work together after the separation. That leaves the child in something of a no-man&#8217;s land relative to constancy. (Constancy is a psychological term that refers to the experience of sameness and dependability of perceptions, even though the stimuli that engender the reaction might vary.) In common parlance, the child needs his or her emotional and other experiences in the different parent&#8217;s houses to be as close to the same as possible. Predictably, this does not happen as much as needed either; sometimes almost never, depending upon a lot of factors.  The child gets different messages about self in each house, again tinged with other messages about the current non-custodial parent. (Keep in mind that just because one parent does not &#8220;say&#8221; anything about the other parent does not mean that messages are not being communicated. Remember, eighty or ninety percent of person-to-person communication is non-verbal.) Then the child goes to the other parent&#8217;s house, where the routines are different and the messages about the parent just left robably also are negative; thus negating some of the first parent&#8217;s messages, while piling on more insult and injury. This happens repeatedly as the child goes back and forth. The result? The child disconnects; meaning, withdraws, or invests in social activities with or without friends rather than parents, or maybe invests in activities that highlight his or her strengths. (In severe cases, we child psychologists see the beginnings of mental illness.) Whilst acknowledging the efficacy of disorder-based cognitive behavioural therapies, he explains the rationale for a transdiagnostic approach to therapy that is a more flexible, efficient and directly linked to theory. He provides evidence that the 15 or more &#8216;transdiagnostic processes&#8217; such as worry, thought suppression, experiential avoidance and safety-seeking behaviours are closely correlated, and that their shared properties are more predictive of psychological distress than their unique elements.
