A New Definition of Retirement

Article by Tracy Piercy

In 2001, Stats Canada presented some figures that form the basis of this new view. And, since the concept is the same regardless of numbers, I am purposely using approximations to make the point that we need to consider which bottom line to look at when we make financial decisions.

Consider that the average working person settles into a career at about age 30 and intends to work for approximately 30 years. When they finish working they hope to live another 30 years to age 90. Right now, when we leave work it’s called retirement, and we tend to think of it as something we do when we reach a certain age. Our average person hopes to fund a retirement that is equal to the same amount of time they spent working. To do this they start to accumulate money and logically want to know “how much money will it take” to support their retirement? The answer is really quite obvious, yet not readily discussed or promoted. In order to leave work and “retire” we must have enough financial resources to provide the income necessary to pay for the lifestyle we desire. When this happens we are financially independent. So our average person is really working to develop income to provide financial independence within 30 years. This is the first concept: retirement = financial independence which may or may not correspond to any particular age.

If our average working household earns about ,000 per year or ,000ish per month after tax, and for 30 years they receive at least a cost of living increase each year, they will have earned over .5 million during their lifetime. If we subscribe to the popular belief that to retire we need to accumulate a large sum of money by saving as much as possible and getting a good return on our investment, then we naturally want to know how much money we need to save? We could answer this hypothetically several ways:

a) Close to the same amount money as was earned over our working lifetime (.5 million); b) Maybe 70% of our pre-retirement earnings because we have been told that retirement expenses will be less than working expenses since everything will be paid for; c) A number projected forward based on our current savings; or, d) Any number we randomly pick such as the popular million.

The answer, then, to how much will really depend on the individual and their lifestyle choices outside of work – and what amount of income is required to support this lifestyle. If we estimate our figures, the asset accumulation model of retirement says that our average household needs somewhere between half and all of what they earned during their lifetime to fund their financial independence – about 0,000 to .5 million. These figures are commonly forecasted in retirement projections and it’s easy to calculate that at various rates of return (say 6, 8, 10 or 12%) on your savings you would need to be putting aside 0 to 00 a month for the 30 years you are working to reach this goal.

Now consider the average take home income – ,000 per month and answer these questions: · How much is a mortgage payment? · How much is a car? · How much is food? · Or, children and entertainment?

Statistics show that the amount the average household is putting towards savings is less than 5% of income. That would give them approximately 0,000 after 30 years (or approximately ,000 per month) towards their financial independence. Even with some government pensions added to the equation it’s probably not what most people intended to work 30 years to create.

If we really want to cloud the current view or retirement saving, we add in the statistics on personal debt, and quickly see that a change in perspective is not just a cute idea; rather it is a critical requirement! Personal debt, outside of mortgages, for lines of credit and credit cards in Canada is in the neighbourhood of billion plus. Approximately 15% of our average household’s pay goes to pay this debt – close to 0 per month.

Why don’t people see this and become more diligent about their saving and spending habits? There are many reasons, but one theory is that the amount of money we are suggesting they accumulate is so far from reach that they just ignore it and hope for a windfall. This lottery mentality is why many people still say they are hoping for a “big win” and continue to postpone their future planning.

Currently, someone reaching retirement will be advised to be extra careful with their accumulated savings because they don’t want to lose it all because it’s all they have. They make their financial decisions based on fear of not having enough or of outliving their money. For 30 or more years they focused on saving and getting a good return to increase their asset pool. Now we change the plan and say “don’t lose it – but spend it – but not too much because you might run out”.

So here’s the second concept: Which number is more believable – .5 million or ,000? What if we promoted the income that could be generated from an investment rather than simply how much it will accumulate to? For example, “you could invest 00 at 5% and accumulate approximately ,000 in 30 years” – or “you could invest 00 at 5% and receive approximately 0 per month from the accumulated value after 30 years”. Getting a good return is obviously important, but ultimately it’s a source of ongoing income we need to become financially independent. Our average household needs to develop an income of ,000 per month. If this seems obvious, then why isn’t this information readily available? And why is it so difficult for people to answer how much income they need to be financially independent? Because it’s just as obvious that we need to spend less than we earn, and that in order to live we need a source of income, but it is easier to spend money than it is to save it, and it’s simpler to live with what we have than to project into the future. This new view simply suggests that we change our focus from asset accumulation and lottery thinking to a focus on developing ongoing income so we can retire financially independent–at whatever age we chose.

How Personal Development Helps Online Entrepreneurs

Article by Bob Ford

People in all kinds of careers and businesses have discovered that personal development offers a definite edge as far as their professional lives are concerned. This applies to online entrepreneurs just as it does to business people in the corporate sector. Many online entrepreneurs have experienced the solid advantages to be gained from enhancing a particular aspect of their personalities, or from learning ways to be more effective and successful in their businesses.

This is particularly relevant in these troubled economic times, when any advantage that one can gain with an online business can make a big difference to your home based business success and financial security. As an entrepreneur grows and develops on the personal front, that growth and development will make its presence felt in business operations as well. Let us look at some of the ways in which personal development helps an online entrepreneur to succeed.

Time management is another area which deserves attention. A grasp of successful time management principles will increase your efficiency and allow you to complete tasks well within the required time.

Online entrepreneurs also benefit greatly from personal development courses in communication. Improving your listening skills and learning how to convey an idea so that it is immediately understood is a great way to help retain your customers, as well as attract new ones.

An online entrepreneur can also learn skills such as effective interaction, better interpersonal relations, learning how to deal with conflict, presentation skills, balancing personal and professional lives and so on, all of which will reflect in enhanced business success.

While there are many things that on online entrepreneur cannot control, such as the economic climate, or market fluctuations, the aspects of an online business within the operator’s control, such as an ability to sell persuasively, or an ability to talk to people, can be developed or created. This kind of personal development can prove to be very advantageous and well worth the time and effort that one puts into a personal development course, or sessions with a personal development coach. Personal development will have your weak areas transformed into strengths, and you will learn how to exploit your strengths so that you will be able to work to the full power of your potential. You will also be able to see how this personal growth and development reflects in the success of your business.

Online Personal Development Course – Fred Flinstone Could have used one!

Article by Jeff Rogers

My favorite online personal development course

Remember the Flinstones <$ firstname$ >?

How Fred had that silly little greenguy Kazoo on his shoulder wheneverhe was dealing with drama?

Well you have a Kazoo too!

Now before you kink your neck lookingfrom side to side for a creepy littlegreen man on your shoulder, let me explain.

All of us have an “inner voice” thattells us what we should do. Or at least it makes one heck of an effortto tell us what we should do.

But most of the time we just sort ofbrush it off. That is where an online personal development course

Like when you hear that inner voicesaying, “Hey, that treadmill is lookingpret-ty lonely my friend. Why don’t you hop on it and give it some attention?”

Or when it says, “I know you’re tiredbut you keep telling me you have dreams.Maybe you could put in just a little more effort for 10 more minutes so youcan actually achieve those dreams.”

The truth is, you already know what youneed to do but just sort of “forget”to do it sometimes. A good online personal development course will keepyou on track.

And until you make doing what you needto do a predominant habit, you willalways forget!

Don’t feel bad, we’re all in the sameboat here.

And that’s why we all need a good, solidreminder of what we’re capable of andwhat we need to do to get what we want.

There really is no new magic informationthat unlocks the mysteries of the Universe.

The laws of success are still the same as there were 2000 years ago.

Bit it’s not really the information thatmatters, it’s more about how you receivethat information and how you tie it intoyour life, right now, today.

And that’s why I like.banabu as my online personal development course of choice.

To remind you, (and myself) of the inherent power you have to create whatyou define as success.

You need it, I need, Oprah needs it, Trumpneeds… We ALL need it (at least all of us who are success minded people).

To your success,

Personal Pension Plans – Does The ‘Best’ One Exist?

September 14, 2012 by

Article by Ray Prince

Like many of our clients, we are constantly updating our Continuous Professional Development (CPD).

One of the many pieces of reading material we were looking through had the title of ‘Advisers Have Vital Role As Persuaders’.

This was based on the results of a survey which asked both individual investors and advisers 5 questions about retirement planning success. Fidelity, an investment group, asked these 2 groups to rank 1-5 the factors below:

The survey aimed to identify how well educated a typical investor is, and to stress how important an advisers job was to ensure that the message they want to get across does indeed communicate itself to individuals. The context for this was that there is a lot of talk about the coming ‘pension crisis’, and how vital it is that investors get the right advice.

Priority / Advisers / Individuals

Amount saved over a lifetime / 1 / 2

Date at which saving started / 2 / 4

Getting the right asset allocation / 3 / 5

Picking the right funds / 4 / 3

Finding the best pension plan / 5 / 1

If we simply concentrate on the first and last factors, we see that the priorities here are reversed. Whilst individuals did understand that the amount saved over a lifetime, identified by advisers as the most important factor, was indeed important, they still rated ‘finding the best pension plan’ as number 1.

Now, we have written many articles on this subject, and are certain that no regular reader will have made this mistake! However, this survey has once again shown that the idea that there is a ‘best pension plan’ out there is still prevalent with individual investors.

We do not have space to reiterate our investment process here, but the long and short of it is that, whilst the pension wrapper is important (as it is tax efficient), the investments within the pension are what really matters.

When we first looked at the results of this survey, it reminded us of a recent experience we had when a new client contacted us after finding our website via Google. He explained that he was concerned about the advice he had been given by his Independant Financial Adviser (IFA), and could we give our view on his situation. When Graeme met him, it became clear that with very little evidence as to why, the IFA was advising the client to invest over £2,600 per month into a Personal Pension. When asked why, the IFA said that it would allow the client to retire earlier, and that this was the ‘best’ pension that he could recommend.

When Graeme asked:

- Were your goals in life discussed properly?

- what risk questionnaire/assessment was used?

- what was the result of the cash flow forecast?

- Have the NHS Pension and State pensions been taken into account?

- where is the expenditure template showing what you need at 60?

- Has the sale of the practice been taken into account?

- Have any possible inheritances been factored in?

- Have the existing investments been built in?

The answers were that none of these had been discussed in detail or at all!

Many things concern us here, including the probability (based on many clients’ case work) that if such planning were implimented, the client would possibly have ‘too much’ for their needs age 60 plus, and in a wrapper which restricts what you can do with it (75% of the proceeds have to be used to provide an income – 25% is available as tax free cash as a lump sum).

This can of course also be at the cost of the client’s life now – what’s wrong with enjoying life and spending money now if more money does not need to be invested?

The key word is measurement – or the lack of it in this case.

To cap it all, the dentist had a copy of the quotation that had been left with him for the Personal Pension. For the few hours work that had been carried out for the client, the last page showed a very interesting remuneration figure for the IFA. This money would be taken from the clients pension account in the first year.

£19,432 to be paid as a lump sum when the client signed up!

The Financial Tips Bottom Line

Be aware that there is no ‘best pension’, and if anyone says there is it’s probably time to take a step back and ask the adviser what form of measurement they have used to arrive at the decision they have.

Action Point

If your adviser has not taken into account the above factors as a minimum to your overall retirement planning, then we recommend you do so now. Retirement planning is not just about pensions – building in all factors and having a life now is quite important!

Also, even if you intend to simply buy policies instead of comprehensive planning, be aware of advisers who charge large amounts of commission and talk about the ‘best pension’.

Great Ways To Enhance Your Personal Development

Article by Lonean

You can gain control over your life if you pursue good personal development goals. It’s important to have some ideas of what you should do to reach your personal development goals. Put the following tips to use so you can begin your journey.

See what is in the way between your success and you. This is hard to do for a lot of people. However, if you can figure out what your weakness is, it’s the first step needed to change it. If you get rid of the things that might stand in your way, you can find the way to clear your path.

Always aspire to do your best at everything you do. Your aspiration to greatness is usually pointed to by your passion. Now, you cannot be the complete best at everything you do, but it does not hurt to try. Trying for greatness helps inspire others to adapt to the same mindset, giving them a boost of self-worth. You should always try to be the best you can be in your profession; your self-esteem will rise as a result.

Be sure to read positive books on the subject of personal development. A good book can provide you with the information that you need to get started on your journey toward a new you. It is always best to check the reviews for a book. Personal development books can be very poorly written.

To be the best you can be means hoping others share in your good fortune. Often the negative thoughts projected on others can boomerang and come back onto you. This means that you are wise to only wish good things upon others. Focusing on positive things will help you stay happy and motivated.

You can learn how to handle difficult problems without over-reacting. Come up with methods that will help relieve your stress and remain calm when problems pop up. Take time to slow down and breathe deeply.

Challenges should always be undertaken. New opportunities can be gained from trying new things. Learning about something new, along with the acquisition of new skills could easily be gained. You can set the bar for something that no one had ever accomplished. Try to find your own path, rather than just following in other people’s footsteps.

Accept your limitations before engaging in personal development. If you understand that there is a lot you can learn and that you have room to grow, you can gain proper perspective. Once this concept is ingrained in your brain, you will be eager to learn new skills and expand your knowledge in order to improve yourself.

Keep a journal with you so whenever ideas hit, you can record them. Keep a small notepad and pen with you at all times. Jot down whatever you come up with in detail and then act on it later when your creativity is flowing naturally.

You can stay focused and filled with energy as you work toward your personal development goals by following a few or all of these tips. It may seem like a daunting task, but if you arm yourself with knowledge you will have a better shot at succeeding.

Your Personal Success Plan – How to Develop It

September 6, 2012 by

Article by Matthew Espino

It has been almost a week into the new year of 2011 and at last you have decided that it is time for you to change for the better. You want to have a more successful and happy life. You want to be financial independent. And you know that you will need to put forth some great effort in changing how you are going to live and act so that you can see great improvements in your life by the end of the year.

NOW, the BIG questions are… how are you going to start making the positive life altering changes in your life? Is there a simple equation for a plan of action that you can follow to kick start the process of attaining a more fruitful life?

A Simple Plan of Action Toward a More Successful Living

We all dream of success but when asked where is your plan of action that can move you to success, most of us do not have one. You see, if you do not have a PLAN, you do not have a template for success. All you have is just a thought. And this will become useless if you cannot transform it into real action. Thought is just like dream, it cannot come true unless you have a plan of action to attain it.

Therefore, if you want success, the first thing you need to create is your plan of action. This will serve as a guide to your success.

So how exactly are you going to create this “plan of action”?

First, write it down on paper or a notepad that you can access any time. Many people make a mistake by not writing things down and as days pass by, they have forgotten everything that they have planned for in their minds. So, if you have something that is worth noting in your mind or thought, write it down!

A simple equation to use when creating a plan of action from your is: Desire + Effort = Results.

The first step in creating your plan of action is to write down your desire. Make sure that it is a realistic one that you can achieve. For example, if you want to earn a million dollar, it is unrealistic to believe that you can earn your first million dollar in one month. But with the right action plan, you can attain that in 3 or 5 years.

The main point to remember here is that you must be realistic and make sure that there should be a time frame with regards to your plan. These time frames are the milestones to marking your achievements. Without a time frame, you are going to take forever.

After you have written down what you want to achieve, the next step is to write down the steps or activities you need to achieve your goal. How are you going to earn your first million? What should you do each day to move you closer to your desire? You need to have all the steps written down in your action plan.

Set up a schedule outlining each step that needs to be taken daily to achieve your goals. Be specific. Create a daily “to do” list. At the end of the week you will be able to see how much you were able to accomplish. Congratulate yourself for each accomplishment.

Next, make a commitment or promise yourself that you will stick with your plan no matter what happens. You see, life is full of distractions and surprises, if you are not careful, you will get derailed from your plan. And when the end of year arrives, you still find that you have achieved nothing and have wasted your time.

So, create your plan of action and stick with it!

Do not let yourself get disheartened. If you experience setbacks, do not quit. Tell yourself that setbacks are part of the process to success and keep moving forward.

Evolution: How to Achieve Personal Growth and Development

September 4, 2012 by

Article by Marc Termine

Life is full of uncertainties. Despite our own efforts to control our environment and to establish a sense of order in the universe, chaos can still arise. Even random events from natural calamities to economic crises can ruin a person’s plans.

How can you find a sense of meaning and purpose in such a flux? The answer is personal growth and development. At the end of the day, all that you can really control is yourself. If we choose to grow and develop, we can claim small victories for the positive changes we achieve. Here are some endeavors that can help you improve as a person and provide you with a deep sense of fulfillment and purpose:

1. Develop Your Physical HealthPersonal growth and development involves a conscious effort to improve your physical health. Positive changes in your body can enable you to participate in more activities where you excel. Furthermore, having a healthy body can also make you more physically attractive. Yes, inner beauty is more important than superficial beauty. But that’s not an excuse to completely disregard your physical appearance. You can develop your physical health by exercising regularly and by eating the right food.

2. Improve Your Financial StatusMoney makes the world go round. As much as you might hate hearing that maxim, there is some truth to that statement. Personal growth and development should involve financial progress. Positive changes in your financial status can and will provide you with fulfillment as long as you can see money as a tool for progress and not an end in itself. Having more financial freedom enables you to impact the lives of people in need. You can help fund medical researchers to find cures, you can create a scholarship foundation and you can even help victims of natural disasters. A life dedicated to changing people’s lives for the better is the very definition of a meaningful existence.

3. Learn More About the UniverseWealth can be stolen. Beauty can fade. Honor can be lost. Only wisdom can withstand the test of time. One clear sign of personal growth and development is gaining knowledge. Positive changes in a person’s reading habits and enthusiasm for study can increase the quality of a person’s life. Learning something new allows you to appreciate the wonders and mysteries of the world even more.

4. Learn a New SkillThe only thing more fascinating than someone who knows a lot of things is someone who can do a lot of things. The ability to tap-dance, do magic tricks, or juggle may seem like trivial endeavors, but these little tricks provide joy and entertainment to people. Learning how to amuse other person or cheer up a gloomy friend is definitely a change in the right direction. Positive changes don’t have to be serious to matter. Living for the joy of others is certainly a life of purpose.

5. Mentor SomeoneEducators often talk about how fulfilling it is to be able to share their knowledge and improve a younger person’s understanding of the world. Fortunately, you don’t have to be an educator to be a mentor. You can volunteer to be a little league coach. You can teach your nephew how to play chess. Or you can teach an orphan how to read. Mentoring someone will accelerate your personal growth and development. Not only will it sharpen the skills you already have, it will also teach you empathy and compassion.

Make the most out of your life because you only have one. Make positive changes in your personal growth and development, because only through this process can your truly create meaning and purpose in a life that’s full of uncertainties. Life is transient, but if we do our best, we can create legacies and memories that will live on long after we are gone.

Transforming Your Life Through Personal Growth and Development

September 1, 2012 by

Article by Charles Stewart

Ask any human being if they could have more in their life, and they would most often answer “yes.” The real question then becomes, what does “more” mean? To many, it means having more money, and more freedom with their time. In short, most everyone desires to have a life of more possibility in terms of “success.” The ways in which that time, money, and energy would be spent reflect the “true passions” of the individuals living that life.

Do you think it is realistically possible to create the life of your dreams? Most individuals believe one is better served by “working with the cards they have been dealt in life.” These same individuals believe they are being “more realistic” in their assessment than those who chase after unrealistic and unachievable “pipe-dreams.” What about it, do you think it is possible to “write your own ticket in life?”

Consider this: if it is possible to create the life of your dreams, exactly how do you go about that? The answer could be stated in many different ways, however, it is true that without growing and developing one’s self as a person (with all that implies,) it is highly doubtful the life will grow beyond “established parameters.”

To say another way: without the personal growth and development of an individual human life, it is highly improbable that any significant and measurable degree of self-realization through the process of self-actualization will ever take the individual beyond the “station they were born to in life.”

On the other hand: if the individual living the lifetime can find the ways and means to grow themselves beyond the ideas given or handed down to them by their family, society, and culture, then there is the very real possibility of achieving a life of greatness; beyond the “station they were born to in life.”

It is a most wonderful time to be alive in our present-day and age upon this planet. If for no other reason, the access we all have to resources never before available to untold previous generations back through time, gives any of us the “tools” to “create the life of our dreams.”

However, the working out of this is much more involved than meets the eye on the surface of things. For example, whatever it is that one desires to create in the life, realize that “attached” to that desire comes something else known as “fear.” I put “fear” in quotes because I am quite sure the individual involved would not perceive and interpret the matter as such. From the perspective of these individuals, those desires and the thing it is attached to would be seen as “realistic obstacles” or “reasons why those desires are not possible.”

No matter how the matter is perceived, it does not change the fact that in order to attempt going after those desires, that there are indeed “internal conflicts” which come about in the process. In order to manifest the things desired in life, every human being must face and truly deal with those “internal conflicts” without “coming to terms with reality,” or the like; which is “code” for “not wanting to face and deal with those internal conflicts or fears.”

The key to changing all of this, and to actually be able to transform your life into whatever you truly want, is to find the ways and means to increase your confidence in yourself; in terms of what is possible in your life. Personal growth and development of the individual is the “saving grace” here.

Open yourself up to the possibility of finding what you need to grow your ideas of yourself and the world around you, through the countless resources available to you at this time on our planet. The internet, bookstores, libraries, you-name-it; find what you are interested in and go after it with a passion. Do not listen to the “old programming issues within you.” Challenge what you know to be true to you about yourself, and the world around you.

If you need to learn from someone else, then do it. If you are able to “go it alone,” that is ok too. The point is to grow the ideas you have in your head (your earlier life programming) which causes you to perceive and interpret your life the way you do. The ideas from your “earlier programming” may sound or feel like your “voice of conscience,” but always remember those ideas may have been put there by other individuals in your life, which you accepted at the time. This does not mean you cannot change those ideas.

Those earlier ideas given and handed down to you were never meant to be all that you were to operate with during the full reign of your life. No, they were given and handed down to you to enable you to get to a “certain point only” in your life, the “rest is up to you.”

If it is too much to consider the possibility of having the power to create the life of your dreams, then do not. Many, many individuals over time throughout the life come to a state of “passive acquiescence.” There is nothing wrong in this. However, there are also those individuals who are not afraid to discover what they might learn about their true potential in life; and it is these individuals I speak to here in this article.

Find whatever ways and means to grow your ideas of yourself and the world around you, for this is a key to improving your self-confidence and self-esteem. Armed with these things, you will find the reasons to become and stay motivated to strive for positive and constructive changes in your life. Armed with these things, you will find yourself creating and living in the life of your dreams…
